Dear Southeast Asian Admits,

At this time, we have finalized our student roster. If you haven't received a phone call from one of our representatives at this point in time, it is because we were unable to grant you a spot to our Admit Weekend. Over 150 students applied for the 100 spots available in our program, due to limited funding and resources. We cannot possibly add more students because of safety laws that we must abide by.

Although we deeply regret that you won't be able to join us this year, we still highly recommend that you attend UCLA's Bruin Day on Saturday, April 9, 2011. You can find out more information and RSVP on the official Bruin Day website. You can also find out more about any of our Southeast Asian organizations on campus by clicking on the links at the bottom of this website. We do hope to see you here in the Fall!

On behalf of the Southeast Asian Organizations at UCLA, we personally applaud you on your acceptance to the University of California, Los Angeles. By now, you should have received an email invitation or personal phone call from a UCLA student inviting you to our very first Southeast Asian Admit Weekend: "Advoca-SEA: Sea Yourself, Sea UCLA, Sea Your Future" from Thursday evening, April 15th – Saturday night, April 17th, 2010, hosted by the Vietnamese Student Union, United Khmer Students, Thai Smakom, Associated Hmong Students, the Laotian American Organization, the Burmese Student Association, and the Office of Residential Life (ORL). ATTENTION LAST MINUTE APPLICANTS!

We are excited to receive your wonderful applications and even more thrilled to have you be a part of SEA Admit Weekend. Since the deadline is tonight at 11:59PM, we know many of you will be scrambling to turn in last minute applications. As of now, we highly encourage you email your application as opposed to mailing them due to the delay in processing time. If email is not possible, we are also now accepting faxed applications. Please fax all pages of the application and consent forms to (310) 206-3175 and include a cover page with "SEA ADMIT WEEEKEND - Nancy Nguyen's mailbox (SEACLEAR)" written on the front. Thursday night registration and check-in will take place at various locations on the Hill. Below are general directions to the dorm area. When arriving, please look for signs designating your specific registration and check-in location.

From the 405 North

Take 405 (San Diego Freeway) to Sunset Blvd.
Turn left on Sunset Blvd.
Turn right on Bellagio Rd.
Turn right on De Neve Dr.

From the 405 South

Take 405 (San Diego Freeway) to Sunset Blvd.
Turn left on W Church Ln.
Turn left on Sunset Blvd.

From the east via the 10 (Santa Monica Freeway)

Take 10 (Santa Monica Freeway) to 405 (San Diego Freeway) North

For participants arriving via plane at LAX there will be an 8 pm and 10 pm:

The UCLA Vanpool will be near Lower Level Terminal 1 (Southwest Airlines). It will be waiting from 8 pm and at 10 pm. There will be a SEA Admit volunteer holding a SEA Admit Sign.

Registration for those arriving by airport, pick up will take place in De Neve B1 Lounge.

For participants arriving via plane at LAX:

Contact the Transportation Coordinator Ethan Nguyen (endeavorous@gmail.com or (714) 837-1649). Notify him of your departure time and location so they can arrange a separate Van Service to pick you up. Provide them with following information:

Note: Students traveling from Northern Calif. and out-of-state, please remember to bring your student ID's and a government-issued ID (state ID, passport, or driver's license) as you will not be able to board your flight without them. In order to confirm your flight, please print out the document we sent to you and speak to a customer service representative at check-in. Please make sure that you arrive at the appropriate airline.

For participants arriving via FREE van transportation:

There are three sites for FREE van transportation. Please note these are only guaranteed for those who indicated they will be arriving by van during their confirmation phone call. If you indicated a different method of transportation, please email us by Wednesday, April 6 by 12 pm in order to get your name on the van list. We also REQUIRE a picture ID in order to board the van. Vans WILL DEPART WITHOUT YOU, so please come early!

(For those who are coming from Northern California or Central California can purchase an Amtrak ticket for Bakersfield and will be picked up at and purchase a departure ticket for Sunday April 10, departing after 7 pm)

Note that you will have to pay for self-parking per day at Lot 11. We highly discourage driving yourself because you will have to move your car everyday before 7 am to avoid a ticket. Each ticket is $50.

I'm not too sure that UCLA is my college of choice, should I still attend SEA Admit Weekend?
Yes! Attending the Weekend is the best way to help you decide whether UCLA is the right school for you. You will be getting a chance to participate in the whole college experience, from living in the dorms, to attending a lecture, to getting a tour of UCLA and Westwood (the business district near UCLA). You'll get to meet students, staff and alumni and truly see how community, advocacy, and education intertwine.

I'm excited and want to go, but I don't want to miss school. Should I still attend the SEA Admit Weekend?
We understand that attending school is important, however, we still highly encourage that you participate in the SEA Admit Weekend. What is unique about the Weekend is that you will actually be able to sit in on real classes, which unfortunately means you will have to miss one day of school. Just to clarify, you will not be missing school on Thursday (unless you're from out of state and need to arrange for earlier flights) since that day is reserved for arrival and check-in only, which lasts from 7-9 pm. However, you will be missing school on Friday. We encourage you to inform your teachers, arrange make up work if necessary, and stress to them the importance of your participation in the weekend in choosing the college of your choice.

I can't make it to the entire weekend, but I really want to go, can I still attend?
Unfortunately, because of limited space we require that all of our student participants attend the entire weekend from April 7^th to April 10^th, 2011. If you have specific concerns, you may contact the core committee at seaadmit@gmail.com and we will evaluate your situation on a case-by-case basis.

How much does it cost to attend to SEA Admit Weekend?
Aside from purchasing souvenirs and other personal expenses, the event, food, and housing are ALL FREE! The only other expense you may have is transportation. However, we are providing free bus rides from three locations to be announced soon.

For students who do not live within the LA area, we will be providing some scholarships to help defray the costs for airfare. Once approved for the scholarship, you will obtain a free round-trip plane ticket from Southwest Airlines. Selection will be based on financial need, relative distance from UCLA, essay answers, and other factors.

Why is it a Southeast Asian Admit Weekend?
Southeast Asians, specifically Burmese, Cambodian, Hmong, Laotian, Mien, Thai and Vietnamese, are historically underrepresented at UCLA and other colleges and universities. This is mainly due to our immigration history, with the majority of Southeast Asians arriving in the 1970s and after. Because of this, many Southeast Asians who attend college or universities are first generation students. In order to ensure that our voices are heard, and our struggles and experiences shared, we want to increase the amount of SEA students at UCLA by hosting this special Southeast Asian Admit Weekend. Our goal is to foster a cohesive, educated community to better ourselves, our families, and our community.

When is the application due?
The application is due by April 1, 2011 at 11:59 pm. However, reservations are on a first come, first served basis. The sooner you turn in your application, the better your chances are of being a participant. Remember, space is limited, and we don't want you to miss this opportunity!

About SEA Admit

Southeast Asian (SEA) Admit Weekend is held in collaboration by Southeast Asian Student Organizations at UCLA, including the Association of Hmong Students, Burmese Student Association, Indonesian Bruin Student Association, Laotian American Organization, Thai Smakom, United Khmer Students, and Vietnamese Student Union, and seeks to promote higher education, increase community consciousness, and provide a safe and supportive Southeast Asian community on campus, while introducing Southeast Asian admits to the vast variety of opportunities and resources available at UCLA.

In its fourth year, the Weekend lets prospective Bruins experience life as a college student at UCLA, and will also include campus tours, multiple workshops, a student/alumni reception dinner, and a talent show, allowing participants to explore the opportunities that make UCLA one of the best universities in the nation. In April 2010, SEA Admit Weekend was recognized with its first-ever Bruin Heroes Award.

SEA Admit Weekend is absolutely FREE to all student participants, including all meals, bus transportation if eligible, lodging, and activities. This year's theme is "Advoca-SEA: SEA yourself, SEA UCLA, SEA your future" to reflect the wide availability of opportunities available at UCLA for yourself and your future. It will be held on Thursday, April 7, 2011 through Sunday, April 10, 2011.
